I emailed Leather4Craft before purchase about dying this leather and I was assured that it will readily accept dyes. IT DOES NOT. I have tried using a quality commercial bookbinding dye, which I know works, but the dye is not taken in to the leather and instead just streaks and dries on the surface . This leather must have some surface coating preventing absorbtion of the dye. Thankfully, I only bought a small piece of leather as a trial.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that you had difficulty dyeing the leather. This calf is the same leather we use for our desktop surfaces, and we have successfully darkened it ourselves using both water-based and aniline dyes. Results can vary depending on the specific dye product used and the application method. From our experience, the leather can be dyed, so it may be that the particular dye or process used didn’t allow it to absorb as expected.
I’ve used this leather for a trifold A6 journal and I’m so happy with it. I keep getting compliments on it and people can’t believe it’s handmade (if you’re browsing because you intend to make a journal with this leather, do it, it’s not difficult! I even sew a pocket and I’m terrible at that).
I used this thickness because I was going for something malleable and I love it for my small A6 journal, which was inspired by Louise Carmen and those are thinner.
I’ve placed my third order today, this time a thicker leather to make an A5 journal, this time inspired by Paper Republic. It’ll be a present for my fiancé for our 5 year anniversary.
I just wanted to say that it’s been 1 month since I made my journal and it’s already developing a gorgeous patina. It feels so personal to me! I used the red leather.
They’ve always been super fast shipping the items I’ve ordered every time, even though I use the Free Delivery option (kinda broke atm so I’m practicing patient, although sometimes it’s hard to wait to receive my leather!).

The colour looked a lot lighter in the photos than the actually leather, if the camera flash is reflected, I would retake them with more natural lighting to reflect the true tone
